In the context of our relationship to authority the Word of God says to give honor and respect to whom it is due (Romans 13closeRomans 13 Submission to the Authorities 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. I do not believe that it would be out of context to reverse that order to give honor, respect and esteem to all the wonderful servants of God who labored so sacrificially to make this past weekend such a God-honoring success. From a pastor’s perspective nothing is quite like seeing so many servants going above and beyond the “call of duty” to labor in love for their local fellowship and family of believers. Christian Heritage Church servants, you never cease to amaze me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done. In every area of need, from planning to setting up, to serving food and cleaning up afterwards, to all the details for the Saturday and Sunday (morning and evening) Celebrations, you were fantastic.

The sound, video and graphics, the musicians and singers, the helps and hospitality ministries, the host homes for the group Chosen, and everyone who had anything to do with this weekend… you are my heroes. Although your names may never appear in headlines or in print, the Lord we serve has taken note. And many, many people commented on your success!

I want to encourage you with this verse from the Bible, and the context of this verse is our ultimate victory through Jesus Christ our Lord:

Two seasons are upon us and for those of us who live in Tallahassee we know them as Spring and Legislative Session! The first one has seen some strange weather (even though it has not “officially” arrived, it usually arrives here earlier than a lot of other places). And I dare not delve into the subject of the “political” season here in Tallahassee – sometimes it can get strange! But I digress…

The two of which I speak are in the spiritual vein. The first has obvious references to Easter, which is the only time some people think of resurrection. I am not as concerned with Easter bunnies and Easter eggs being a focal point for those who do not know Christ. After all, it is the responsibility of those of us who are believers and do regularly attend church to point others’ attention to the real meaning of Easter. I am concerned that many believers allow those things to serve as distractions from our focus – the Resurrection of Jesus.

No, we won’t be sending out the Easter bunny or Easter egg (or the little chicks’) police to monitor everyone – after all, who doesn’t love some “peeps?” We can allow distractions in any form in any season if we aren’t focused on Christ and His kingdom. Every day should be a celebration of His resurrection for those who have been raised to newness of life, even in the midst of our daily lives and all it entails.

The second season is somewhat unique to Christian Heritage Church. Not revival per se, but what season we are in as a fellowship of believers. Soon we will be celebrating 100 years of ministry here in Tallahassee! As I contemplate that event in light of “revival,” I thank God for what revival is: recovery, restoration, regeneration and rejuvenation.  The dictionary says it is an improvement of the strength and condition of something, a reawakening of spiritual fervor, a restoration of bodily or mental vigor to life or consciousness.

That is what we are seeing in the beginning stages and that is what we believe for in our congregation, in our city and our county and in our nation. The second is tied to the first. If we focus on the first and live it out, the second will happen. Resurrection AND Revival – two great seasons….

Will you join me on the First Friday of each month for fasting and setting aside a time of consecrated and concentrated prayer? The fast would be up to you – fast the entire day, one main meal, etc.

I will be corresponding regularly as a reminder and to encourage your participation. We will be asking for responses from you to share with us any breakthroughs or impressions from the Lord that would encourage the local fellowship.

As we come to the final days of the Daniel Fast, there are a few things we need to be reminded of – first and foremost is that we should develop a lifestyle of fasting and praying. There is no substitute or easy way for us to accomplish things in our own souls than through fasting and praying. Although this prescribed time is ending, will you make it a frequent and regular part of your life? 

Jesus said, “If any one desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23closeLuke 9:23 Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. This involves turning to the Lord and putting Him first in your life, and then turning away from anything that keeps you from following Him.

There are three words in this verse that should influence your Daniel Fast. First, the word “deny” means that you should get rid of anything that hinders your relationship with Christ. You must get off the throne of your heart, and Jesus must sit there and control what you eat and drink.

The second word is “daily.” Following Jesus means 24-7 dedication, so your Daniel Fast requires a 10-day or 21-day vow accompanied with continuous prayer. The third word is “follow.” Just as Jesus fasted in preparation for His spiritual work, so must you follow Jesus’ example with a Daniel Fast for your spiritual vow.

Humility is required to live such a lifestyle and humility is an interesting word. Webster says it means, “to reduce oneself to the lowest position in one’s own eyes, and, or the eyes of another.” It comes from the word humus, which means “from the earth.” Humus is that rich organic soil that is formed from the partial decomposition of plant or animal matter. Look deeply: the rich soil that produces new life comes from death of other matter. So when you “crucify” yourself – or you die – you produce an experience that gives new life from God.

Sometimes our flesh takes control of our motives even when engaging in spiritual disciplines. We are humans and God understands that, but He also has placed within us an eternal longing for Him. As we exercise the spiritual disciplines of fasting and prayer, let’s ask ourselves what our motives are and what rewards we expect.

Yes, as stated in the Scripture above, He does reward those who fast and pray. Let’s not become like the pagans (unbelievers); the entire focus of their lives is food, clothes, shelter, “things” – He says the pagans run after these things – but we should not worry about these things, but “…seek first the kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matt 6)

We seek HIM, not things…even the necessities of life, for He has given us grace, strength, talents, and natural abilities to achieve them. His highest passion for us is for us to demonstrate a passion for Him. The things we seek from Him. There daily needs we have in the natural. Ask God for His provision and thank Him for them. But, as we seek Him during this Daniel fast, let’s seek for the spiritual, supernatural things…to become more Christ-like – centered on the Kingdom and His harvest…the souls of man!

As we move into a New Year, most of us are aware that some changes need to take place in our individual lives as well as our society. How do we effect those changes… where do we begin?

Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (ESV) , in a passage we call the Beatitudes, Jesus provided the pattern by which each of us should live as a child of God. He addressed three specific duties of Christians: “When you give”… “when you pray”… “And when you fast.” He made it clear that fasting, like giving and praying, is a normal part of Christina living.

If Jesus could have accomplished all He came to do without fasting, why did He fast? Why should we? Most of the church’s early reformers-including Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Knox-fasted. Knox fasted and prayed so much that Queen Mary said she feared his prayers more than all the armies of Scotland. John Wesley, the renowned English preacher, missionary and founder of Methodism, fasted twice weekly from sun up until late afternoon. Charles Finney, a revivalist of the 1800s, fasted regularly and would often go three days without eating when he felt any decrease of spiritual power at his meetings.

Dr. Bill Bright, founder and president of Campus Crusade for Christ, makes it his practice to fast and pray. He believes it plays a vital role in what God does through him and the ministry of Campus Crusade. Dr. Bright encourages believers to fast, but he also warns of two common pitfalls:

First, we can become legalistic about fasting. It is essential to remember God loves us even when we do not fast.

Second, we can take pride in our fasting. We can avoid this problem by focusing on God’s character and all He has done for us. Most of us do not need to worry about having the wrong attitude or motive while fasting. A more likely problem is we may not fast at all.

Fasting is a commitment to seeking the Lord. It is not reserved for the self-righteous, but it is a privilege from which each of us can benefit. Jesus fasted because He knew there were some supernatural things that needed to happen that could only be released that way. He never expected His disciples to do anything HE had not done. And He did expect them to fast – “…the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then {emphasis added} they will fast in those days.” (Luke 5:34-35closeLuke 5:34-35 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” (ESV) closeLuke 5:34-35closeLuke 5:34-35 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” (ESV) 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” (ESV) NKJV) 

The purpose of our fasting and praying is to put our focus more on Him and what He wants than what our very basic needs are. As we do that, there will be a release of the supernatural that only comes from fasting. 

We do have a tendency to think we may not see the results of our fasting and praying. As we fast and pray to begin this year, let us have faith and look expectantly for God to release the supernatural flow in our lives, both individually and corporately. May this be the beginning of a new season of growth in every area of our lives as we focus on pleasing Him!

What a day! We honor the birth of the Savior of the world! 

However and with whomever you choose to spend Christmas, please know that Barbara and I are praying for you to be drawn closer to Christ – not just the Christ-child, but the resurrected Savior and Lord.

Few, if any,  have ever been born with their purpose so clear. Imagine his growing up years as He understood that He lived to die. His life was lived and given for you and me. You see, He not only died FOR us, He died AS us! He became our substitute. 

Even if your memories of Christmases past bring hurt or pain, you have an opportunity to make new memories. That is what His life is all about – second chances! Enjoy this holiday as we honor the birth, life and death of our Savior. 

If you are traveling, or if you have family traveling to see you, we pray for safety and protection. Make this the most glorious Christmas ever!
